Rest Camps

Berg-en-Dal sits in the high-rainfall rocky south-west. The mountain valleys trap mist in the early mornings, creating incredible mood lighting for photography — the roads wind sharply around large granite outcrops.

• The S110 Mountain Loop

  Drive the S110 loop road surrounding the camp — a classic zone for white rhinos feeding on short grass and leopards hiding among the granite hills. Scan the rocky peaks for klipspringers and mountain reedbuck.

• The S120 / S121 Malelane Road

  Head east towards Malelane or north towards Skukuza. These valley routes are great for tracking wild dog packs that use the clear roads to travel quickly across territories.

• The H3 Main Artery

  Access the main H3 highway heading north. The broad-leaf woodlands here host large herds of elephants, kudus, and giraffes. Matjulu Waterhole is a crucial early-morning stop.

• The Dam-Facing Perimeter Family Huts

  Request Bungalows 10 to 18 or Units 24 to 31, sitting right against the camp fence overlooking the Matjulu riverbed or the small internal dam. Elephants routinely come right down to the fence to strip bark.

• Standard Perimeter Sweet Spots

  The southern row of bungalows faces straight out into rugged bush hillsides, giving a true sense of isolation.

• Camping Environment

  The campground forms a large terraced loop. Secure a spot on the outer edge of the upper tier to stay clear of stormwater runoff during summer cloudbursts, with better views through the fence.

Letaba is the gateway to the great northern elephant country. The riverbanks dictate animal movement — at dawn, look for paths where animals cross the wide sand banks of the Letaba River.

• The H1-5 River Frontage

  Turn right out of the gate onto the main H1-5 highway heading south towards Olifants. The road winds closely alongside the river — excellent for massive elephant breeding herds and big waterbuck.

• The Engelhard Dam Loop (S46/S47)

  Drive east along the north bank of the river on the S46 to the massive Engelhard Dam. Viewpoints here are excellent for hippos, water birds, and lion prides waiting for buffalo herds to come down to drink.

• The S95 / S48 Mopane Loop

  A rugged northern route that cuts deep into the mopane thickets — a good alternative if you want to escape other vehicles and search for eland or rare antelope like the roan.

• The Premium Riverfront Bungalows

  Request the BD2 perimeter units, specifically Bungalows 17 to 32, which look straight down across the lawns and fence line onto the wide Letaba River sandy bed. Bushbuck graze inside the camp gardens.

• Safari Tents

  The permanent canvas tents numbered T1 to T10 offer an authentic atmosphere under the deep shade of old mahogany trees.

• Camping Excellence

  Letaba boasts one of the most beautiful, densely wooded campgrounds in the park. Secure a site on the northern boundary fence line for complete immersion and shade.

Lower Sabie sits inside the park's most active predator zone. At 06:00 AM, the direction you take must match your target species instantly.

• The Sunset Dam Standoff

  Turn immediately right out of the gate onto the H4-2 towards Crocodile Bridge. Travel just 1km to Sunset Dam. Arrive within the first 5 minutes of gate opening for active crocodiles, hippos fighting for territory, and leopards slinking away from the water edge before the birds alert the bush.

• The H4-1 Reverse Run

  Turn left out of the camp gate along the Sabie River. This is one of the most productive leopard stretches in Southern Africa. Focus binocular scans on the massive granite boulders and river reeds near Lubvhlubvhu Waterhole.

• The S30 / Muntshe Loop (The Cheetah Plain)

  Cross the Sabie River via the high-level bridge and immediately take the S30 dirt road. It opens into expansive sweet-grass plains under the shadow of the Muntshe Mountains — prime territory for cheetahs and massive breeding herds of buffalo.

• The Safari Tent Sweet Spot

  Lower Sabie's permanent safari tents are legendary — request Tents 19 through 28. These sit directly on the perimeter fence overlooking the Sabie River loop, with elephants and hippos consistently visible within 20 metres of your private deck.

• Bungalow Recommendations

  Target the EH2 and BD2 units (specifically 40 to 55). These are well insulated from the main restaurant foot traffic and maintain an unhindered bush feel.

• Camp Sites

  The campground is tight and fills up rapidly. Take a corner site along the eastern fence perimeter to avoid being boxed in by overland trailers.

Mopani is built on a rocky hill overlooking Pioneer Dam. At dawn, look down over the water directly from the camp before even turning your car key. The surrounding mopane shrub can be thick, so focus heavily on water sources.

• The Pioneer Dam Boardwalk & Hide

  Start your morning with a walk down the internal boardwalk to the bird hide, or look out from the restaurant deck — hippos return to deep pools and fish eagles hunt in the early light.

• The S142 Tsendze Loop

  Drive south-west on the S142 loop running along the Tsendze River. This breaks out of the thick mopane into open alluvial flats — excellent for tracking large tuskers and lions.

• The S50 Tropic of Capricorn Route

  Head east on the S50 towards the Mozambique border line. This remote gravel road leads to the Shipandani sleep-over hide area, with a genuine wilderness feel far from tourist crowds.

• The Premier View Chalets

  Request the luxury perimeter chalets numbered 43 to 49 or 90 to 102, built right on the edge of the hill crest with an unbroken panoramic view down across Pioneer Dam.

• Standard Cottages

  The stone cottages are large and comfortable. Outer perimeter units on the western loop provide a true sense of quiet, looking out into wild mopane shrubland.

Camping note: Mopani has NO campground. The highly-rated Tsendze Rustic Camp, just 7km south, is a camper's paradise with no electricity, giant trees, and an authentic bush setting.

Olifants requires patience. You do not come here for dense predator counts; you come for high-quality elephant herds, specialised birding, and unique geology. The mountain location means you must descend into the valleys for optimal viewing.

• The High-Level River Bridge Route

  Exit the camp and head south down the H1-4 to the main Olifants River Bridge, where you can step out of your vehicle. At 06:15 AM you can look down on massive pods of hippos and family herds of elephants drinking in the morning glow.

• The S44 Clifftop Loop

  Take the short loop road S44 along the steep gorge walls — an exceptional landscape photography road. Keep your eyes locked on the dense trees hugging the rocky cliffs for leopards and rare birds like the Pel's Fishing Owl.

• The S93 Northward Plain

  Drive north toward Letaba on the main road, branching onto the dirt S93. This shifts from rocky terrain to mopane shrubland, offering good opportunities to spot massive old bull elephants (tuskers).

• The Clifftop Elite Bungalows

  Secure Bungalows 111 to 120, positioned directly on the edge of the cliff face — the view drops away straight into the river valley hundreds of feet below. Baboons barking and hippos grunting are audible from bed.

• Standard Perimeter Units

  Units 1 to 15 also offer an excellent view out towards the eastern plains and the Lebombo mountains.

Camping note: Olifants has NO camping or caravan facilities. All guests must book brick-and-mortar chalets or guest houses — campers should look to Balule or Letaba instead.

Punda Maria sits in the far northern sandveld, a unique ecosystem often called the "Kruger Galapagos" for its rare plants and birds. Game numbers are lower here, but you can find species not seen anywhere else in the park.

• The S99 Mahonie Loop (The Masterpiece)

  Drive the legendary 25km Mahonie Loop immediately at 06:00 AM. It winds through sandveld hills covered in Mahogany and Baobab trees, world-famous among birdwatchers, with regular sightings of shy leopards and rare antelope like Suni and Sharpes Grysbok.

• The Pafuri Asphalt Run (H1-8 / H1-9)

  Drive north towards the Luvuvhu River and Pafuri border area. The 1.5-hour drive down into the Luvuvhu river valley brings you to spectacular forests of giant Fever Trees and Ana Trees, filled with large elephant herds and nyala.

• The Klopperfontein Dam Drive

  Head south-east along the H1-7 to Klopperfontein Dam — a lonely waterhole that magnets old bull elephants and lions during the dry winter season.

• The Historic Ridge Huts

  Request the original white-walled, thatched historic roundavels numbered Huts 1 to 7. Perched high on the rocky ridge, they offer historic charm and catch cool evening breezes.

• The Luxury Safari Tents

  Book the permanent safari tents numbered T1 to T7, built along the upper perimeter fence with a rustic look out into dense hillside forest.

• Camping Configuration

  The campground is small and intimate, forming a neat circle around a central thicket. Secure a site on the southern outer fence line to be closest to the small floodlit waterhole just outside the camp wire.

Satara is surrounded by open plains. Visibility is excellent, but lions use the tarmac roads at dawn to walk without getting wet from dew-covered tall grass — driving slowly on tarmac yields excellent results here.

• The H1-3 / N'wanetsi River Corridor

  Head south from the camp gate on the H1-3, then swing left onto the S100 dirt road. The S100 is widely considered one of the top predator roads in the park, following the pools of the N'wanetsi River through open country. Look for mega-prides frequently numbering over 20 lions.

• The H7 Westward Push

  Drive west towards Orpen Gate. This flat, wide-open road is a known hotspot for cheetahs hunting plains game and the resident wild dog packs. Nsemani Dam (7km west) is a mandatory 15-minute shutdown-engine observation point.

• The S41 / Gudzani Loop

  Head east towards N'wanetsi Lookout, then loop along the S41. A remote, rugged alternative where large general-game concentrations attract big male lions.

• The Outer Fence Line Kings

  The premier choices for wildlife lovers are the standard roundavels on the outer fence line of Circle B (Units 50–65) and Circle F (Units 160–175). Hyenas pace this exact wire fence every night looking for scraps.

• Guest Houses

  Wells Guest House offers premium private positioning away from the main camping sectors, perfect for large multi-generational families.

• Camping Configuration

  The campsites are dusty but wide open. The best spots line the southern fence boundary, giving an unobstructed view into the dark savannah plains at night.

Shingwedzi is all about the river loop. The vast surrounding mopane plains can be very quiet, but the Shingwedzi River loop concentrates life spectacularly — do not rush, drive slowly and look closely into the undergrowth.

• The S56 Mphongolo Loop (The Master Track)

  Drive north out of the camp and turn onto the S56 dirt loop along the Mphongolo River — widely praised by rangers as one of the finest scenic drives in the park. Giant trees line the banks, hosting leopards, old bull elephants, and large herds of nyala.

• The S52 Kanniedood Dam Loop

  Head east along the riverbank on the S52 loop, winding past Kanniedood Dam. Features excellent bird hides and scenic lookouts where lions often rest on the cool river sand.

• The H1-6 Southward Trek

  Run south towards the plains of Shisha — a reliable open alluvial plain for cheetahs and massive herds of buffalo.

• The Outer Ring Nostalgic Units

  Request Bungalows 1 to 20 in the original A-circle layout — deep porches look directly onto the riverine boundary fence, where elephants feed on seed pods just metres away.

• The Luxury Rentmeester Units

  For premium amenities, book the exclusive Rentmeester Guesthouse or the prime family chalets on the quiet northern loop.

• Camping Configuration

  The campground forms a large open loop along the fence. Secure a site on the far eastern corner under the weeping boer-bean trees for premium shade and fence views.

Skukuza requires an immediate tactical exit to bypass heavy day-visitor safari vehicles. If you linger past 06:15 AM, you will get stuck in traffic queues. The ultimate strategy is to clear the immediate camp perimeter immediately.

• The H4-1 River Run (High Yield/High Traffic)

  Turn left out of the camp gate onto the H4-1 towards Lower Sabie. Focus heavily on the first 8km stretching between Skukuza and the Nkuhlu Picnic Site. The dense canopy makes this prime leopard territory. Scan the massive branches of Natal Mahogany trees dangling over the river bed.

• The H1-2 to H12 Loop (The Cheetah Alternative)

  Cross the Sabie River via the low-water bridge on the H1-2. Turn left onto the sand road loops (S83 or S1) or proceed north towards the high-level bridge (H12). This route offers wide-angle river views where wild dogs regularly den or cross.

• S65 Waterhole Loop (The Predator Gamble)

  Head south-west out of the camp onto the H1-1, then drop onto the dirt S65. This loop cuts through dense woodland and passes Nwaswitshaka Waterhole. It is notoriously quiet but known for isolated lion pride ambushes.

• Premium Riverfront Units (Luxury/Views)

  Target Guest Cottages and Luxury Bungalows numbered LB21 to LB26 and LR1 to LR3. These face the Sabie River directly — you can sit on your patio and watch elephants crossing the water.

• Standard Bungalow Sweet Spots

  The BD2 and BD3 perimeter blocks offer excellent trade-offs. Secure units facing the outer boundary fence on the northern edge for maximum nighttime hyena patrols.

• Camping & Caravan Layout

  The camping area is large and busy. The best sites are along the western fence line, farthest from the communal ablution complexes but offering unparalleled rustic shade from giant Jackalberry trees.
