    They are primarily herbivores that feed on a variety of grasses, succulents, and fruits, but they will also gnaw on old bones and hyena droppings to obtain essential calcium for their shells.

    Unlike many other reptiles, leopard tortoises do not hibernate; instead, they remain active year-round, seeking shelter in abandoned aardvark burrows or under thick bushes during extreme heat or cold.
