Tracking Intelligence: Leopards are the vertical masters of the Kruger's predator guild. Their entire hunting and resting ecology is organised around elevation — they use trees not just for food storage but as elevated observation platforms that give them a panoramic view of the terrain below while remaining invisible from ground level. We consistently recommend scanning the major fork-junctions of large Sycamore Fig trees along the H4-1 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie at first and last light. The fork is where a leopard resting with a kill will drape its body across the horizontal branch.

The leopard's carrying capacity is the most impressive feat of functional strength in the African predator guild. A female leopard, weighing 30 to 40kg, will routinely hoist an adult impala carcass — a prey item of roughly equivalent mass — five to six metres vertically up a tree trunk in under 30 seconds. This is the equivalent of a human lifting their own body weight continuously overhead to a height of three storeys while climbing a vertical surface with no handholds. We have timed this event on the H4-2 and confirmed that the ascent from ground to primary branch takes between 20 and 45 seconds.

Leopards are strictly solitary outside of mating and mother-cub relationships. An adult male and female occupying the same tree or the same 100-metre radius is almost always a mating pair — the male has been tolerated into the female's territory for the brief duration of oestrus. A female with a large, near-independent cub may also appear as a 'pair' at distance. Any other combination of two leopards in proximity is functionally impossible under normal territorial conditions. Use this rule to instantly determine the social context of any multi-leopard sighting.

The leopard's contact call — a deep, sawing rasp repeated rhythmically — carries extraordinary distances in the still air of the Lowveld bush at night. The sound is most commonly described as a hand-saw cutting through rough timber, with each stroke of the saw representing one call unit. We have documented this call from within the Skukuza camp perimeter on still winter nights — animals calling from the southern bank of the Sabie River, over 1km away, are clearly audible from the camp's perimeter fence. If you hear this sound at night, you are in leopard country.

Berg-en-Dal
Nestled in a rugged, rocky environment in the south-western corner of the park. The camp is known for its unique flora and the presence of white rhino, kudu, and wild dogs.
Ranger tip: Check the granite koppies on the S110 loop for leopards resting on the boulders.
Biyamiti
A secluded bushveld camp situated on the banks of the Biyamiti River. The camp is exclusive to residents and offers a tranquil experience in a riverine forest setting.
Ranger tip: The S139 river road is restricted to residents and is world-class for leopard sightings.
Olifants
Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this camp offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Olifants River below. It's an excellent location for spotting elephants and other animals coming to the river to drink.
Ranger tip: Use binoculars from the camp lookout deck to scan the riverbanks for leopards.
Identification Protocol

Analyze the substrate. Soft river sand near Skukuza will provide deep, clear imprints, while hard northern mopaneveld soil requires looking for shallow "ticks" or claw marks.

Look for the stride length. A walking Leopard will leave a regular, repeating pattern. Changes in gait often signal proximity to water or recent predator interaction.
